The Accademia Nazionale di Danza (AND) is a prestigious institution founded by Russian dancer Jia Ruskaja and integrated into the Italian university system today. It was officially established in 1948, transforming a structure that had been in place since 1940, which was affiliated at the time with the Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica.
Established in 2001 within the Academy, the international competition "Premio Roma Danza" rewards young dancers who come to Rome to compete against the best technicians of their generation. Each year, alternately, the competition highlights the two domains that characterize the art of dance: performance and choreographic creation. "Video-dance" is also a category that is gaining increasing importance within the competition. It encourages international dancers who may not have the means to travel to Rome to participate nonetheless by submitting a recorded work. In fact, this approach has allowed the competition to continue uninterrupted during the two years of crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The increasing involvement of the City of Rome, through its Municipalities (equivalent to district municipalities), has resulted in the creation of a new "video-dance" category introduced in 2021. The objective of the "Prix Roma Capitale" is to highlight the creativity of young Romans while showcasing their connection to the territory through its geography, historical aspects, and socio-cultural elements.
The financial support from the Foundation covers all individual prizes.
